Dos Santos TKOs Velasquez, Wins UFC Heavyweight Belt

Junior Dos Santos made the UFC’s debut on Fox network a short affair, as the Brazilian fighter stopped Cain Velasquez in just over a minute to win the UFC heavyweight title on Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Facing an undefeated champion in his first title shot, Dos Santos lured Velasquez into a stand up fight before landing an overhead right that dropped the Mexican champion to the canvass. Dos Santos then jumped on a defenseless Velasquez and pounded his way to victory. Referee John McCarthy called an end to the main event of UFC on Fox at 1:04 of the first round. Dos Santos improved to 8-0 in the UFC and 14-1 overall, while Velasquez, whose reign ended in his first defense, dropped to 9-1.

After the fight, Velasquez admitted that he made the mistake of allowing Dos Santos to take control of the fight. “I waited too much for him. He went in and did what he was supposed to do, so my hat is off to him,” Velasquez said.

In the main supporting match, Ben Henderson defeated Clay Guida via unanimous decision in an action-packed affair that was also named Fight of the Night.
