Drew Barrymore Tops Hollywood’s Most Overpaid
Drew Barrymore has been given the distinction as Hollywood’s most overpaid in a list released by Forbes magazine.
In a list that ranks Hollywood celebrities’ ability to attract box-office gross vis-à-vis their astronomical salaries, Barrymore holds the unenviable title as the worst investment among the current crop of stars. According to Forbes, every dollar that studios pay the E.T. star returns only a paltry 40 cents. The magazine considered the top 40 highest-paid actors who had at least three movies over the past five years with May 1, 2011 as the cut-off date. Animated films, which usually have top stars lending their voices, were not included in the computation as the real stars of the movies are really the characters not the actors, Forbes said.
Ranking a far second to Barrymore is comedian Eddie Murphy, who has had a string of flops over the past couple of years. Murphy, who is paid relatively higher than Barrymore, returned an average of $2.70 per dollar received. Will Ferrell followed Murphy with a $3.50 return on investment for every dollar of salary. Reese Witherspoon ($3.55 per dollar) and Denzel Washington ($4.25 per dollar) rounded out the top five.
