Drew Brees Named SI Sportsman of the Year
Drew Brees has been named as Sports Illustrated‘s Sportsman of the Year 2010 not only for leading the New Orleans Saints to their first Super Bowl title, but also for helping the city recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
Brees, who came to New Orleans in 2006 as a man looking for a team that would believe in him following a serious shoulder injury, ended up finding a community that needed a hero to help people get back on their feet following Katrina. For five years, Brees played the role to the hilt and finally reached the peak of success when he took the Saints to the Super Bowl in February, giving New Orleans something to celebrate for the first time in a long while.
“It just makes me reflect back on the last five years in New Orleans, and the teams that I’ve had the opportunity to play for. And it’s just been a special, special journey,” said Brees, who will receive the honor in New York City on Tuesday evening. “It’s an unbelievable honor, for everything that it stands for,” he said.
