Duchess of York Apologizes for Selling Access to the Duke of York
Sarah, Duchess of York was recorded making a deal to introduce an undercover reporter to her former husband Prince Andrew, the current Duke of York. She later apologized for the incident.
Sarah Ferguson was filmed by an undercover reporter from News of the World who was posing as a businessman. She was seen in the video saying, “£500,000 when you can, to me, open doors”. She then accepted a briefcase containing £40,000 (57,000 USD) as down payment.
Her formal apology is as follows:
“I very deeply regret the situation and the embarrassment caused. It is true that my financial situation is under stress however, that is no excuse for a serious lapse in judgement and I am very sorry that this has happened. I can confirm that The Duke of York was not aware or involved in any of the discussions that occurred. I am sincerely sorry for my actions.”
The Prince and Ferguson were married in 1986, separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996. They have two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
