‘Elle’ Magazine Denies Retouching Gabourey Sidibe Cover
Controversy sparked regarding an upcoming Elle magazine cover featuring a lightened Gabourey Sidibe.
Sidibe, 27, will be one of the four actresses to grace the cover of four issues of the magazine for its 25th anniversary next month. The others are Megan Fox, Lauren Conrad and Amanda Seyfried.
In her cover, Sidibe looks lighter and she is the only one among the four who has a close-up shot. She is shown from shoulders up while the other three have almost full body shots.
Sidibe was considered for cover as she is one among the chosen notable female celebrities in their 20s. Sidibe earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, a feat that is rarely seen for black and full-sized women.
Elle magazine denied any of the allegations. In a statement to Yahoo, people behind the magazine said, “We have four separate covers this month and Gabby’s cover was not retouched any more or less than the others. We had 25 cover-worthy subjects in our portfolio and we chose Gabby because of who she is. We shot this as a story of exuberant young women changing the world. If you take a look at the portfolio, each of the women were shot in different ways and for different reasons.”
Sidibe now stars in the television series The Big C.
