Elton John Calls Jesus Gay
British singer Elton John has stirred up a hornet’s nest and is sure to be at the receiving end of criticisms from Christian groups after he described Jesus as an intelligent gay man. Asked about his take on Christianity during an interview with Parade Magazine, the 62-year-old singer behind the hit song Candle in the Wind said that Jesus was “a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems.” He made the observation after pointing out that Jesus forgave and loved the people who nailed him to the cross.
Christian groups immediately reacted to the statement, with Bill Donohue of the Catholic League saying that John’s comment was tantamount to calling the Son of God “a sexual deviant.” The Church of England, on the other hand, said that “insights into aspects of the historic person of Jesus” should be left to academics.
More criticisms are expected to come the singers way, especially at this time when the Christian world is observing the start of Lent, when devotees commemorate the death of Jesus.
