“Expendables” Stays Atop Box Office
Sylvester Stallone and his muscle-heavy cohorts in “The Expendables” held off a laugh-out loud comedy spoof of the “Twilight Saga” to remain the king of the weekend box office for the second-straight week.
“The Expendables” took an estimated $16.5 million to beat “Vampires Suck,” which earned $12.2 million during the Friday-Sunday period. The Fox-released comedy has now grossed $18.6 million since opening on Wednesday. A very close third was Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love,” which managed to rake in $12 million to push its total to more than $47 million after two weeks.
The comedy “Lottery Ticket,” with rapper Bow Wow in the lead role, had a modest first weekend with $11.1 million in fourth place. Another holdover, the Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg cop-buddy, “The Other Guys” remained strong in its third weekend with $10.1 million, just around $100,000 better than the 3D remake of the horror flick “Piranha.”
Emma Thompson’s “Nanny McPhee Returns” came in at seventh spot with $8.3 million to edge another Jennifer Aniston flop, “The Switch,” which opened with a dismal $8.1 million despite heavy marketing and promotion. “Inception,” which has grossed more than $261 million in the domestic box office, and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” rounded out the top ten.
