“Fast Five” Sets April Record with $83.6 Million Debut

Fast_Five_posterFast Five,” the fifth installment in “The Fast and The Furious” franchise, was the runaway winner at the North American box office this weekend, taking an estimated $83.6 million to set the best opening this year and the best-ever April debut of all time.

“Fast Five” reunites original stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Jordana Brewster. Tyrese Gibson of “2 Fast 2 Furious” also rejoins the franchise, which added Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to the mix. Justin Lin, who helmed the third and fourth installments of the franchise, also returns. “Fast Five” was the only debut to bring in the money, though, as Disney’s “Prom” and the Weinstein Co.’s “Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil” both bombed at the box office. “Prom” earned an estimated $5 million while “Hoodwinked” labored to a $4.1-million opening to land fifth and sixth for the weekend, respectively.

Holdover “Rio” continued to impress with an additional $14.4 million at second place for a $103.6-million cume. Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family” took $10.1 million for third place while the Robert Pattinson-Reese Witherspoon starrer “Water for Elephants” earned $9.1 million at fourth spot.
