Colombian footballer kills fan for calling him “lousy”

A Colombian footballer shot and killed a fan for calling him “lousy” on Sunday, days after the player’s team lost a local championship.

According to local reports, Atletico Junior midfielder Javier Florez fired two shots at 27-year-old Israel Campillo who, apparently – along with a group of other people – blamed him for losing the title in the Apertura tournament against Once Caldas.

Florez fled the scene of the shooting but soon turned himself in to authorities.

Atletico Junior played the final match of the tournament against Once Caldas late last month and lost both the away game 2-1, as well as the home game 1-3.

The shooting recalled the case of Andres Escobar, a defender on Colombia’s national team who was gunned down in a Medellin suburb after his own goal in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
