‘Footloose’ Remake Gets Newcomer for Lead

Footloose_PosterThe troubled remake of one of the most popular films in the 1980s has finally got a cast. A newcomer will be playing the lead role that has been turned down by two of the current popular young actors.

Kenny Wormald, 25, got the lead role Ren McCormack, the role that shot Kevin Bacon in to fame in 1984.

Wormald previously appeared in the MTV series Dancelife.

The role has been first offered to Zac Efron and Chace Crawford. Efron turned it down as he doesn’t want to be typecast in musical films. He had the lead role in the first three installments of High School Musical. Crawford meanwhile has to drop it due to scheduling conflicts with his television series Gossip Girl.

Joining the cast are two-time Dancing with the Stars champion Julianne Hough, 25, who will play Ariel opposite Wormald, and Dennis Quaid who will play the role of Reverend Moore.

The director of the film is Craig Brewer of Hustle & Flow after Hairspray director Adam Shankman and High School Musical series director Kenny Ortega turned down the project.

The planned release for the film is April 1, 2011.
