Former DND secretary Angelo Reyes dies in apparent suicide

Angelo Reyes Suicide

MANILA, Philippines–Former defense secretary Angelo Reyes died Tuesday morning after sustaining a gunshot in his chest in an apparent suicide, according to television reports. He was 65.

Reyes was the Chief-of-staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) from 2000 to 2001 and served as Secretary of National Defense under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from 2001 to 2003. Media speculation attributed the probable suicide to an ongoing corruption investigation that has shaken the AFP. Reyes was one of several former military officials accused of accepting bribes in the military.

Initial reports said Reyes shot himself in front of his mother’s grave at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City. The former DND secretary was rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center at about 7:45 a.m. (local time) and doctors tried to revive him for 45 minutes before declaring him as expired.

Throughout his career, Reyes received numerous awards and recognitions from both the military and civilian institutions. However, he was tagged in alleged massive corruption at the AFP in relation to a plea bargain agreement over a plunder case involving former military comptroller Carlos Garcia.
