French Open: Caroline Wozniacki Crashes Out
Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki was eliminated from the 2011 French Open on Friday, losing to no.28 Daniela Hantuchova in the 3rd Round, 6-1, 6-3.
Wozniacki, currently the no.1 player in the world, could not get going against her Slovak opponent, who had previously lost to the Dane in their previous three matches. Wozniacki’s loss means the top two women seeds will not be around for the Round of 16 following world no.2 Kim Clijsters’ loss to Arantxa Rus the previous day. Huntuchova, who had never won against a reigning number one before, will next face 13th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, a 6-0, 6-4, winner over Rebecca Marino.
Also crashing out on Friday was no.8 seed and 2010 runner-up Samantha Stosur of Australia. Stosur lost to Argentina’s Gisela Dulko, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. However, defending champion Francesca Schiavone advanced to the fourth round after China’s Peng Shuai retired in the second set while trailing 6-3, 2-1. Schiavone must now face former world no.1 Jelena Jankovic for a place in the quarterfinals.
