Gisele Bundchen Creates Buzz with Breastfeeding Pitch
Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has created controversy after her comments about making breastfeeding mandatory in the first six months of an infant’s life hit some sensitive nerves.
In an interview with “Harper’s Bazaar,” the 30-year-old new mom said that in her opinion, there should be a “worldwide law” to make breastfeeding mandatory in the first six months from a baby’s birth. “Some people here (in the US) think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?”
Her statement provoked mostly negative comments from readers, who though Bundchen was going too far in suggesting that breastfeeding be made mandatory, considering her influence as one of the most recognized celebrities in the world. Bundchen issued a clarification in her blog on Monday, saying that she was merely expressing her opinions about breastfeeding. “My intention in making a comment about the importance of breastfeeding has nothing to do with the law,” she said. “I understand that everyone has their own experience and opinions and I am not here to judge.”
Bundchen recently gave birth to her first child with husband Tom Brady, and she credits breastfeeding son Benjamin for helping her keep her figure.
