CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009: Guadeloupe vs. Nicaragua

The 12-team tournament for the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean continues with a doubleheader tonight in Houston, Texas, with Guadeloupe facing Nicaragua and Panama vs. Mexico in the nightcap.

Guadeloupe’s 2-1 win against UNCAF champion Panama in Group C gives the “Gwada Boys” a huge lift entering tonight’s match against Nicaragua.

Guadeloupe was the surprise team of the 2007 Gold Cup when it reached the semifinal round. As an overseas department of France, Guadeloupe is not a member of FIFA, soccer’s international governing body. Many of its residents have French passports and the majority of the players on the current roster play professionally in France.

On the other hand all the players on Nicaragua’s national team are amateurs, with only one player (Daniel Reyes) playing abroad (Tigres – Brazil). Nicaragua must at least squeeze a draw against Guadeloupe to stay alive.

Game time is 8:00 p.m. EDT at the Reliant Stadium.

UPDATE: Stephane Auvray and Ludovic Gotin scored in the second half as Guadeloupe shut out Nicaragua 2-0 to advance to the next round of the tournament.
