2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinals: USA vs. Panama
The biggest names in USA soccer are not playing in tonight’s quarter-final match against Panama. Four of the 23 players on the original U.S. roster have returned to their European clubs: Charlie Davies, Freddy Adu, Steve Cherundolo and Michael Parkhurst.
It’s a young squad, with 16 players having entered the Gold Cup with five or fewer caps but it’s almost impossible to see anything other than a comfortable U.S. victory here. It would take a near perfect game for Panama to pull off an upset.
Unbeaten in group play, the Americans are expected to capture the Gold Cup again following its impressive recent run in the FIFA Confederations Cup.
Game time is 8 p.m. EDT at the Lincoln Financial Field.
UPDATE: Substitute forward Kenny Cooper converted a penalty kick in overtime and the United States men’s national team defeated Panama, 2-1.
