2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup Semifinals: USA vs. Honduras

The United States men’s national soccer team takes on Honduras tonight for the right to advance to Sunday’s Gold Cup final at Giants Stadium. More than 30,000 tickets have been sold, and a large number of Hondurans is expected for the match.

Los Catrachos finished behind the U.S. in group play, and beat Canada to advance to the semifinals.

Many of the top Americans are not on the squad because of the team’s crowded summer schedule. There’s no Landon Donovan, Tim Howard or Carlos Bocanegra. Other players have returned to their European clubs.

However, history does not favor Honduras. They’ve never beaten Team USA in this tournament and four years ago lost to the Americans in the semifinals after conceding two goals in the last five minutes.

Los Catrachos will need to take advantage of its overall speed, and especially that of forward Walter Martinez to beat the defending champions.

Game time is 7 p.m. EDT at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.

UPDATE: Team USA scored goals at the end of each half to earn a 2-0 victory over Honduras. The Americans will face Mexico in Sunday’s final. El Tri defeated Costa Rica 5-3 in penalty kicks after the two sides were tied at 1-1 after 120 minutes.
