Guard shoots himself at Mandela’s home
An officer guarding Nelson Mandela‘s home shot and killed himself Saturday, according to local reports.
The 37-year-old sergeant, who was working for the police VIP unit, shot himself in front of colleagues in a guardhouse outside of Mandela’s residence in Johannesburg. He was previously a member of the South African National Defence Force and joined the police service in 2005.
Authorities said there was no apparent reason for the suicide.
The former president was at home at the time of the incident, but, according to the police, he was not in any danger.
Mandela, an anti-apartheid activist, held office from 1994-99. He has received more than one hundred awards over four decades, most notably the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
