Hilary Swank Sorry for Attending Chechen Leader’s Party
Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank has reportedly apologized for attending a birthday party in honor of controversial Chechen Republic leader and alleged human rights violator Ramzan Kadyrov.
Swank, in a statement, said she had no knowledge that the October 5 concert was for the birthday of the controversial leader. “I deeply regret attending this event, which has thrown into question my long and deeply-held commitment to the protection of human rights,” said Swank, who has won two Academy Award best actress statues for “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby.”
According to reports, Swank greeted Kadyrov when she went up on stage during the concert held in the city of Grozny. A spokesperson for the actress, however, said that the greeting was merely to prevent a situation where the actress would be perceived as rude. Swank said that she would not have accepted the invitation had she known what the event was for. “If I had a full understanding of what this event was apparently intended to be, I would never have gone,” she said. Swank was reportedly paid handsomely for the accepting the invitation, which was rejected by stars such as Eva Mendes, Shakira, and Kevin Costner.
