Hollywood Stars Invade Tony Awards Nominees List
Several Hollywood mainstays have proven their mettle against the best of Broadway as they contend for several Tony Awards, theater’s equivalent of film’s Oscars. Leading the Hollywood crossover are Oscar-winner Denzel Washington, Jude Law, and Catherine Zeta Jones.
Washington, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for “Glory” and best actor trophy for “Training Day,” is nominated for his leading role in “Fences.” Law joins Washington in the best actor category for his role in “Hamlet.” Zeta Jones, on the other hand, scooped up a leading actress in a musical nomination for his Broadway debut in “A Little Night Music.”
The leading actor in a play category is virtually a showdown among Hollywood mainstays with Alfred Molina (Red), Liev Schreiber (A View from the Bridge), and Christopher Walken (A Behanding in Spokane) competing with Washington and Law for the plum award. Meanwhile, Zeta Jones said her Tony nomination was more than what she expected at this stage in her budding Broadway career. “In my dreams, I couldn’t imagine a better way to make my Broadway debut,” she said.
The Broadway version of Green Day’s “American Idiot” is nominated for best musical, further boosting the punk band’s growing reputation as a mainstream act.
The awards will be given on June 13 in a ceremony at the Radio City Music Hall. The event will be shown on CBS.
