Initial Reviews for James Cameron’s “Avatar” are In!

Avatar, the latest film by James Cameron, is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, December 16. The film has recently been screened to a number of pundits and initial critical reaction is largely positive. As of this writing, Avatar has a solidly fresh 94% rating on popular movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 17 reviews – just 23 positive reviews away from earning the site’s “Certified Fresh” stamp of approval.

Most of the critics who have published their advance reviews of the film, including Hollywood Reporter’s Kirk Honeycutt and Variety’s Todd McCarthy, praised the movie for effectively demonstrating another breakthrough in filmmaking. Since its inception, a lot of the hype surrounding Avatar was focused on the new technology, involving cameras that simulate human sight, that was employed by Cameron and his crew to make the movie look photorealistic. Fans of the director and curious moviegoers who are eager to experience this fabled technology firsthand can now heave a sigh of relief knowing that the movie has indeed delivered on its promise exceptionally well.

Avatar, starring Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver, is Cameron’s much-awaited comeback film. It is his first film since his immensely successful 1997 romantic drama, Titanic, for which he won the Academy Award for best director. Will he get his second Oscar for Avatar?
