iPad 2 Sales Could Reach 1 Million: Report
Apple’s new iPad 2 tablet is on target to sell nearly one million units in its first weekend, Reuters said in a report.
If analysts are correct, the next-generation tablet would trump the performance of its predecessor, the iPad, which needed close to a month to breach the one-million sales mark. The iPad 2 started selling in the U.S. on Friday, with a survey conducted by Piper Jaffray showing that 70 percent of buyers were first-time owners of the popular Apple tablet. Brian White, an analyst at Ticonderoga Securities, said finding an available iPad 2 over the weekend was difficult. “Our field checks over the weekend indicate that the iPad 2 sold out at every Apple and non-Apple store we contacted,” he said.
Retailer Best Buy said some of its stores ran out of the hottest tablet in town within minutes. The iPad 2, which is thinner and faster than its predecessor, is expected to dominate the tablet market despite the expected arrival of competition from RIM and HP, which are both scheduled to release their own tablets in the coming months.
