Iranian Cleric: Blame Women in Revealing Clothes for Earthquakes
Scientists across the globe who have been losing sleep trying to find the reasons for the successive devastating earthquakes this year may want to listen to this Iranian cleric. Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi said women who reveal too much skin cause earthquakes.
According to the senior Iranian cleric, “women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes.” Sedighi said during a sermon that Iranians should adapt their “lives to Islam’s moral codes,” which require women to be covered from head-to-toe, if they want to avoid the same strong earthquakes that have occurred this year. A growing number of Iran’s younger generations are trading their traditional Islamic clothing for Western-style wardrobe to the chagrin of the conservative government.
Sedighi’s “expert” explanation comes as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned that millions of people living in the Iranian capital of Tehran must be relocated to avoid many casualties in the event that a strong earthquake hits the city. Three strong earthquakes have hit the world today, leading to thousands of deaths. The latest to be hit was China’s Tibetan region, where at least 2,000 died last week.
