Is ‘Faith Fighter’ the ultimate fighting game for these dark times?
Various religious and spiritual organizations are calling for a ban on an online game called Faith Fighter where holy figures such as Jesus, Lord Ganesha and the prophet Muhammad fight to the death.
Critics say the flash-based game designed by Molleindustria is ‘deeply provocative’ and ‘disrespectful’ towards all religions.
“Faith Fighter is the ultimate fighting game for these dark times. Choose your belief and kick the shit out of your enemies. Give vent to your intolerance! Religious hate has never been so much fun,” the game’s introduction reads.
To play the game, the arrow keys and the space bar are used to navigate the menu but you can also configure the keyboard in the options.
You can choose between 6 characters: God (from the Old Testament), Jesus, Buddha, Budai (a.k.a. the laughing Buddha representing the Chinese folk religion), Lord Ganesha, Muhammad plus a secret final boss.
After protests from religious groups, the game currently has a censored version along with the original version.
A spokesman for Molleindustria said the purpose of the game was “to push gamers to reflect on how sacred representations are often used to fuel or justify conflicts between people”.
