Italian PM Berlusconi punched in face at rally (video)
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was left bloodied after a man with a history of mental problems punched him in the face at a political rally in Milan Sunday.
Berlusconi suffered two broken teeth, a minor nose fracture and cuts to his lip. He was bundled into a car and rushed to hospital after the assault.
The assailant, Massimo Tartaglia, was apparently holding a statuette of the Duomo, the city’s world-famous cathedral, before he lashed out.
Authorities said the 42-year-old had no criminal record and was not among the small group of protesters at the rally, but they said that he has been under treatment for mental problems for 10 years.
It is the second time that the prime minister has been attacked in public. In 2004 he was hit over the head with a camera tripod while strolling in Rome.
