J.D. Shapiro Says Sorry for Writing “Battlefield Earth” Script

The man credited for writing the screenplay of what is considered one of worst movies of all time wants earthlings to know that he was sorry for creating “Battlefield Earth.” In an open letter published in the New York Post, J.D. Shapiro said it was not his intention to punish moviegoers with the scientology centered “Battlefield.”

“It wasn’t as I intended — promise. No one sets out to make a train wreck. Actually, comparing it to a train wreck isn’t really fair to train wrecks, because people actually want to watch those.”

Shapiro adds that what made it to the final product was far from the script he submitted, saying that “my screenplay was darker, grittier and had a very compelling story with rich characters.” “Battlefield,” which starred John Travolta and based on a book by Scientology founder Ron L. Hubbard, was awarded the “Worst Movie of the Decade” at the Razzies earlier this month.
