James Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, was rushed to hospital on Thursday after he was involved in a freak motorcycle accident.

Caviezel suffered cuts and bruises when a man hurled a bicycle into the path of his Harley as he rode through a northern area of Washington State. The 40-year-old actor was taken to Cascade Medical Center for treatment.

A police spokesperson said Caviezel’s injuries “could have been a lot worse” had he not been wearing a helmet, and that mental issues may be involved in why the 42-year-old man tossed the bike.
