Joe Mauer Signs $184-Million Contract Extension with Twins

Minnesota Twins fans will continue to have their hometown hero Joe Mauer for at least another eight years. Mauer has agreed to stay put in Minnesota through the 2018 season for a whopping $184 million, the richest contract for a catcher in MLB history.

Mauer, last season’s AL MVP, will earn $23 million a year from 2011 under the contract extension. The three-time AL batting champion’s deal with the Twins is lower only to Derek Jeter’s $189 million soon-to-expire contract and Alex Rodriguez’s 275-million deal with the New York Yankees. The deal will be officially announced today at Fort Myers, Florida, where the Twins are holding their spring training.

The 26-year-old Mauer, who has been a fan favorite since the Twins made him the No. 1 overall pick in 2001, led the MLB last year with a .365 average, the highest among catchers in the history of the league. He also won his second-consecutive Gold Glove Award last season, when the Twins reached the AL Division Series.
