Joe Satriani accuses Coldplay of plagiarism

coldplay plagiarism

Hours after receiving seven Grammy Awards nominations, Coldplay was sued by guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani, accusing the British band of plagiarizing one of his songs.

Satriani claims that the band copied portions of his 2004 instrumental “If I Could Fly” to use in their 2008 hit song “Viva La Vida”.

The rock guitarist is seeking a jury trial, damages and “any and all profits” connected to the alleged plagiarism.

“Viva La Vida” went straight to No 1 on the UK charts when it was released in June. Song-writing credits list singer Chris Martin, bass player Guy Berryman, guitarist Johnny Buckland and drummer Will Champion.

We gave the tracks a listen and spotted some similarities, especially on the chord progression.

What do you think? Did Coldplay copy Mr. Satriani?
