Juan Manuel Marquez stops Juan Diaz in ninth round

Mexico’s Juan Manuel Marquez stopped Juan Diaz of Houston in the ninth round to claim the IBO lightweight title along with the vacant WBA and WBO crowns at the Toyota Center Saturday night.

The two fighters constantly punched at close range, but in round No. 8, Marquez took advantage of a cut near the right eye of Diaz.

The cut was opened with a left uppercut, and a left blow from the Mexican stunned the” Baby Bull” in the final 30 seconds of the round.

Marquez swarmed after Diaz in the ninth, unleashing combinations that set up more thudding uppercuts that finished off the American.

“I got caught with a good punch,” Diaz told the Houston Chronicle.

“I’m young,” he said. “I’m still 25. My career isn’t over yet, and I graduate in May, so at least I got that to look forward to.”
