Kara DioGuardi Reveals Date-Rape Ordeal in Memoir

Kara DioGuardi may be known to many as one of the most successful and recognizable people in the music industry, but behind the seemingly strong personality she shows in public is a woman struggling to deal with a traumatic past.

In a new memoir, the 40-year-old former “American Idol” judge reveals that she was sexually molested at 11 and date-raped at 30. In excerpts to “A Helluva High Note” obtained by E! online, DioGuardi recalls being molested several times by a teenaged family friend. “On one particular day, he took me into the back shed of his house and put his hands all over my breasts and vagina,” DioGuardi writes in a no-holds-barred account. “I remember freezing and not knowing what to do.”

Then in 2000, when her career as a singer-songwriter was starting to take off, DioGuardi said that she was date-raped by a “fairly known producer” after going out on what was supposed to be a friendly dinner. “[W]ithin a few hours, he was on top of me, pumping, sweating, and speaking to me in Spanish, not a word of which I could understand,” DioGuardi said.

Aside from revealing her experience at the hands of sexual predators, DioGuardi also talks about the reason she left “American Idol” after season nine. “A Helluva High Note” will be available starting April 26.
