Karl Malden dead at 97

Academy Award-winning actor Karl Malden, best known for his performances in the film classics A Streetcar Named Desire and On The Waterfront, has died aged 97.

Malden died in his sleep at 2:30am (local time) in his California home, according to his agent.  No cause of death has been disclosed, but he had been struggling with his health for several years.

Born Mladen George Sekulovich in Gary, Indiana, the bulbous-nosed actor made his screen debut in the 1940 movie They Knew What They Wanted. He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1951, for his performance in A Streetcar Named Desire, and was nominated again in 1954 for his role as a priest in On the Waterfront.

Malden successfully made the transition to television, and his role of homicide detective Mike Stone in The Streets of San Francisco earned him four consecutive Emmy nominations as lead actor in a drama series.

Here’s our little tribute to the great Karl Malden.

Rest in peace Karl.
