The underdog, the dark horse, wins the nation over!

Kris Allen, the 23-year-old college student from Conway, Arkansas beat theatrical powerhouse Adam Lambert in the season finale of American Idol.

A hundred million votes were cast overall, Ryan Seacrest told the Nokia Theatre audience and viewers watching at home.

Kris wins a record deal, although this won’t be the last time we hear from crowd favorite Adam either.

The night before the results show, the two finalists faced off for their final performances wherein they sang three songs each.

In the first round, Adam performed Mad World by Tears For Fears, a song he sang during the earlier stage of the competition; while Kris sang Bill Withers’s Ain’t No Sunshine.

In round two, Idol creator Simon Fuller picked Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come for Adam, and Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On for Kris.

Then the two performed No Boundaries. It was the final song they sang on Tuesday, and left the final impression in the audience’s mind as everyone went off to dial or text their votes.

Kara DioGuardi, who has worked in the past with Kelly Clarkson and co-wrote Ashlee Simpson’s hit single Pieces of Me, is credited as co-writer of the victory anthem.

Before the results were announced, Kris and Adam had a moment of musical camaraderie: They joined together with Queen on the rock anthem We Are the Champions.

“Adam did win. So did Kris. Nobody lost tonight. These are two champions,” said Paul Stanley backstage.

And thanks to some performances by well-known artists: KISS joining Adam for Detroit Rock City and, for an encore, Rock and Roll All Nite; Jason Mraz joining Anoop Desai and Alexis Grace on I’m Yours; a duet featuring Danny Gokey and Lionel Richie and a lot more.

Me too..I wonder why...I don't feel good when Adam's name was not announced. Judging on their performances today with queen and the other artists..I thougt Adam would win.. Look at Simon's face when Kris's name was announced. No offense to the fans of Kris but it seems the audience was shocked when his name was not announced..:-(
  • I'm so upset that Steve Martin didn't win that I'm going to stop eating for the rest of my life.
  • Morgan<3's kris
Kris Allen is amazing!! I was shocked when he won, but i was excited!! I screamed so loud I had a headache afterwards. I've been reading some comments from Adam's fans they are saying Kris winning ruined American Idol..My thoughts on this are hilarious. That is ridiculous! If American Idol was going to be ruined it would have been when Taylor Hicks won. GO KRIS! Haters go away. I would also like to thank all of the Adam Lambert fans for their JEALOUSY! :)....Go Kris. And ARKANSAS is amazing for voting for Kris as much as they did! Arkansas gladly excepts:)...GO KRIS for making your dreams come true. You are truly an American Idol to all.

    -Morgan Taylor...Kris Allen fan! <3 :)
  • I’m a mother of two boys and a devout Christian, too. As TV viewer, I recognize that American Idol is a singing talent contest open to all. It is not supposed to be a popularity contest for class of persons in society. America’s vote for Kris, or America’s vote against Adam, seems to be a contemptuous hate vote against the various sectors of America that Adam appear to stand for. Among Season 8’s contenders, Adam Lambert was consistently the amazing artist and the best singer, gifted with a powerful voice. ADAM LAMBERT DESERVED TO WIN. Kris Allen himself knows this in his Christian heart, so much so that when he was unexpectedly handed the undeserved crown, he openly hesitated then asserted in public that “Adam deserves this…” — in righteous adherence to glaring truth and instinctive repudiation of the unbelievable, subsuming vote results. You could actually count many seconds before perplexed Kris finally acquiesced to received the crown, but only after Adam graciously approached him in encouragement. Adam Lambert is the true winner! What is wrong with America? Or what is wrong with this American Idol TV show?
  • Hi! I'm a devout Christian and a working mother of two boys. Each time I watch the Finale replayed, I could only ask: What is wrong with this American Idol TV show? We TV viewers recognize American Idol as a singing talent contest that is open to all, regardless of orientation or religion. It is not a popularity contest among certain classes of persons. Of all the show’s contestants, Adam Lambert consistently proved to be the amazingly innovative artist and the best singer, gifted with a powerful voice. ADAM LAMBERT DESERVED TO WIN. Even Kris knows this within his Christian heart, so much so that when he was unexpectedly handed the undeserved title, he evidently became perplexed and then asserted in open public that "Adam deserves this..." – instinctively repudiating the unbelievable subsuming vote results and in righteous adherence to glaring truth. You could actually count so many seconds before the puzzled Kris finally acquiesced to receive the undeserved crown, but only after Adam graciously approached to place his arm around Kris’ shoulder in encouragement. Adam Lambert is the true winner! America's vote for Kris Allen, or America's vote against Adam Lambert, seems to be a contemptuous hate vote against various sectors of society that Adam Lambert appears to stand for. American Idol is a singing contest, not a political battle. So should I also ask: What is wrong with America?
  • I'm a devout Christian and mother of two music-loving boys, but I ask: What is wrong with America? America's vote for Kris Allen, or America's vote against Adam Lambert, seems to be a contemptuous hate vote against various sectors of society that Adam Lambert appears to stand for. People set aside the fact that American Idol is a singing talent competition open to all, not a popularity contest for class of persons; and neither a political race nor an arena for religious warfare. In Season 8, Adam Lambert consistently proved to be the amazingly innovative artist and the best singer, gifted with a powerful voice. You could actually count so many seconds before the puzzled Kris finally acquiesced to receive the undeserved crown, but only after Adam graciously approached to place his arm around his room mate’s shoulder in encouragement. ADAM LAMBERT IS THE TRUE WINNER. I should also ask: What is wrong with this American Idol TV show, anyway?
