La Liga: Barcelona vs. Sevilla
Defending champions FC Barcelona will meet fourth-placed Sevilla FC at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan tonight with both sides looking for positive results.
Barca are currently a point ahead of Real Madrid with two games left and with the Catalans at home to an inferior Valladolid side on the last day of the season, a victory would all but seal the title for Per Guardiola’s side.
This match is also crucial for the Rojiblancos. They defeated Racing Santander in midweek to leap-frog RCD Mallorca back into fourth place, but they know anything other than a win against the defending champions could see them drop back out of next season’s UEFA Champions League.
“Barcelona have a lot to play for, but we have much more,” Sevilla chairman Jose Maria del Nido told the club’s official website. “Barca have won many league titles whereas we have hardly ever played in Europe’s top club competition, unfortunately. It would only be our fourth time.”
Should the Andalusian club beat the Blaugrana tonight, a Madrid victory against Athletic Bilbao would put them in control. If this scenario unfolds and Los Blancos claim the title, a lot of pundits would applaud them for their efforts.
Of course Barca are the heavy favorites to win this game. They are unbeaten in their last five La Liga meetings with Sevilla, and they have won the last three scoring 11 goals, without conceding any in the process. However, Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the rest of the squad have to play extremely well to get past this heavy test.
The match kicks-off at 21:00 CET.
UPDATE: Barca maintained their one point lead at the top of the table following a 3-2 victory at Sevilla and after Real Madrid won 5-1 at home to Athletic Bilbao.
