La Liga: FC Barcelona vs. Real Sporting de Gijon
FC Barcelona begin the defence of their Primera Division title when they host Real Sporting de Gijon this evening.
The game kicks off a day late because Barca played in the UEFA Super Cup final in Monaco against Shakhtar Donetsk on Friday.
During that event, Pedro Rodriguez combined well with Lionel Messi to net the decisive goal five minutes before the end of the match. Unfortunately Barca will be without Messi tonight because the Argentine forward is on international duty.
Meanwhile Ukrainian centre back Dmytro Chygrynskiy completed his $36 million move from Shakhtar Donetsk to Barcelona today.
Accompanied by his brother, who is also his agent, the 22-year-old travelled to the club offices where he met president Joan Laporta and other directors to sign his contract.
“I feel lucky to sign for Barca. I’m hoping to improve and form a part of this great team,” he told the club’s TV station.
Chygrynskiy is the first Ukrainian player in the Catalan club’s history and the third signing of the summer after Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Brazilian left back Maxwell Andrade.
Game time is 10:00 p.m. CET (4:00 p.m. ET) at Camp Nou, Barcelona.
UPDATE: Barca kicked off its league campaign with a straightforward 3-0 victory against Sporting. Bojan Krkic and Seydou Keita had put the defending champs 2-0 up at the interval before Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted his first goal for the club on 82 minutes.
