La Liga: FC Barcelona vs. Espanyol

Lionel Messi was ruled out of tonight’s La Liga clash between FC Barcelona and Espanyol because he suffered a sprained ankle at the end of his side’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Dynamo Kiev in midweek.

A statement on the club’s official website said: “Messi has been evaluated and it has been confirmed this afternoon that he has a grade II sprain to his right ankle.”

The Catalan giants meanwhile are in good form after winning their last four matches and are assured of a spot in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

After tonight’s visit of Espanyol, Barca travels to the United Arab Emirates for the semi-finals of the Club World Cup next Wednesday.

UPDATE: Zlatan Ibrahimovic sealed a penalty to give Barca a 1-0 win against their crosstown rival Espanyol.
