Lady Gaga to Join Rally Vs. Military’s “Don’t Ask” Policy
A group planning a rally against the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays has succeeded in getting a high-profile supporter as Lady Gaga has reportedly signified her intention to join a protest action in Portland, Maine.
Reports said Lady Gaga will grace the event scheduled on Monday at Deering Oaks Park near the University of Southern Maine, where the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network would be calling on Maine Republican senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to vote for a Democrats-led defense bill, which includes provisions that would allow lawmakers to repeal the controversial law that prohibits gay and lesbian military personnel from revealing their real sexual orientation.
Snowe and Collins, who are both undecided on the issue, could prevent the Republicans from blocking the move with filibuster by siding with the Democrats. If not all 41 GOP senators would vote against the defense bill that the Democrats are pushing for, the proposal would go to the Senate floor without a hitch. Republicans claim that Democrats are pushing for the repeal of the policy in order to score some points with the LGBT community ahead of November elections.
