“Last Exorcism” Takes Box-Office Lead over “Takers”

In a slow end-of-August weekend, “The Last Exorcism” edged the ensemble cast of “Takers” to win the box-office battle by merely $300,000.

It was a third-straight weekend box office title for Lionsgate, as “The Last Exorcism” raked in a better-than-expected $21.3 million. “Takers,” an action-thriller with Paul Walker, Matt Dillon, Hayden Christensen, Jay Hernandez, Idris Elba, and singers Chris Brown and T.I., took $21 million thanks to the individual star power of its cast. The Lionsgate-released and Sylvester Stallone-led “The Expendables” slid to third place after two weeks on top with $9.5 million, which raised its three-week total to $82.1 million.

In fourth place was Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love” with $7 million followed by the surprisingly strong “The Other Guys,” which is now less than a million dollar short of joining the $100-million earners this summer with an additional $6.6 million in its fourth weekend. The comedy “Vampires Suck” had a dismal second-weekend with only $5.3 million. “Lottery Ticket” and “Piranha 3-D” also had slow weekends, while the “Avatar” re-release, with more than eight minutes of additional scenes, took $4 million from 812 3-D only locations, pushing its record domestic haul total to $753.8 million.
