Lionel Messi Injured in Barca Victory

Barcelona recovered from a shocking defeat to newly promoted Hercules last week by edging Atletico Madrid, 2-1, at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, but celebrations were tempered after reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi suffered an ankle injury late in the match.

Messi started the scoring for Barca in the 13th minute when he found the net following a Pedro pass. Atletico quickly equalized on 25 minutes as Raul Garcia headed home a Simao Sabrosa corner. However, Barcelona would regain the lead in the 32nd minute as Gerard Pique came away with his first goal of the season.

Both teams had opportunities to score after the restart but the action-packed second half would end with neither side finding the net. Barca also failed to fully celebrate their victory after Messi was stretchered off the pit with an injured ankle following a take down from Atletico defender Tomas Ujfalusi less than five minutes before the end of regular time.

Barca manager Pep Guardiola, who earned his first victory at Vicente Calderon, said Messi did not suffer a fractured ankle, but could be out two to three weeks.
