Lionel Messi wins Ballon d’Or

Lionel Messi has been named Europe’s footballer of the year, becoming the first Argentine to receive the notable Ballon d’Or award on Tuesday.

The FC Barcelona striker finished ahead of last year’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo by a record 240-point margin. He is the sixth Barca player to win the trophy but the first for four years—since Ronaldinho.

Messi, 22, was the top scorer in last year’s Champions League with nine goals, including his outstanding header in the 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the final.

The winner of the Ballon d’Or is selected by a panel of journalists and football officials in a vote organized by France Football magazine.
