man throws shoes at bush

BAGHDAD–Just weeks before he leaves office, U.S. President George W. Bush made an unscheduled farewell visit to Iraq on Sunday.

Air Force One landed at Baghdad international airport for a visit that the White House said was for Bush to thank US troops, meet Iraqi officials and celebrate a new security pact.

The president was accompanied by his national security adviser Stephen Hadley and spokeswoman Dana Perino.

Unfortunately, during his visit, a man threw his shoes at the outgoing president and was dragged away by security officers during his farewell trip.

The incident took place as Bush was appearing Sunday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Bush ducked and wasn’t hit by either shoe. Bush joked, saying that all he can report was that it was a size 10 shoe. Then calmly took questions.

Interestingly, I think this incident says more about what Iraq has become than what Bush did to Iraq. A place where you can actually insult leaders and live to see another day. Ironically, an act of protest reassures the goals of the person he is protesting.
