Manchester United Rallies for Community Shield Win
Manchester United kicked off its title-retention bid in the English Premier League on a high note as the defending champion rallied from two goals down to beat Manchester City in the Community Shield, 3-2.
FA Cup holder City appeared headed to victory after two first-half goals by Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko. Lescott struck first with a header on 38 minutes before Dzeko made it 2-0 for City a minute into the first-half injury time with a long-ranged hit that sailed beyond the reach of United goalkeeper David de Gea.
Chris Smalling cut the United deficit to half in the 52nd minute with a recovery of an Ashley Young free kick. Then, Nani took over. The Portuguese star leveled the match six minutes after Smalling’s goal before completing the United comeback with a spectacular one-man show late in the match. With the match headed for a shootout, Nani stole the ball from City captain Vincent Kompany then rushed unhindered to the penalty area, where he beat Joe Hart for the final goal, four minutes into injury time. “It is good to play against Man City and win like that. I think our fans today will be so proud of us. It is a beautiful day to enjoy,” Nani said after the victory. The Red Devils will begin their Premier League fixtures on Saturday against West Bromwich Albion.
