Millions of Zimbabweans need food aid
Nearly 7 million Zimbabweans need food aid to survive until the next harvest in April, the World Food Programme (WFP) said Thursday.
The WFP said in a statement that the small African nation is suffering under a severe economic and political crisis, and more than half of its 12 million people do not have enough to eat.
“The economic situation has worsened more dramatically than we had anticipated,” WFP regional spokesman Richard Lee told AFP.
Because of the increase in the number of hungry people, cereal rations will be cut to five kilos (11 pounds) per person per month, he added.
Zimbabwe‘s situation has been worsened by a cholera outbreak across the country which has taken the lives of nearly 3,100 people and infected 58,993 — the worst Africa death toll from cholera in 15 years.
