It will be a battle of beauty and brains when the Miss Universe 2010 pageant night takes place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Monday, with Miss Philippines, Miss Venezuela, and Miss Bolivia among the favorites to win the title based on an online poll.

This year’s batch of candidates include 83 women from Albania to Zambia who are all vying for the title to be vacated by Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez, who was crowned Miss Universe at 18 years old when the event was held in Bahamas last year. An online poll held in the run up to the pageant night shows Miss Philippines Venus Raj, Miss Bolivia Claudia Arce Lemaitre, and Miss Venezuela Marelisa Gibson among the leading vote getters.

A win for Miss Venezuela would give the Caribbean country a record third-consecutive win. Poison frontman Brett Michaels and NBC correspondent Natalie Morales will host the event, which would be shown live on NBC and Telemundo. The pageant will also be shown in some 190 countries and territories.

To William Baldwin’s question, Venus Raj unconsciously thought out her answer in native language (Tagalog) and then blurted her response in second language (English). Psycholinguists will agree that a non-native speaker, even if intermediate in level, may hardly be able to respond with spontaneous eloquence in second language during a time-sensitive, public situation. The hard lesson learned is that, even if a Philippine beauty candidate can speak English, she should opt to avail of interpreter service, as Miss Mexico did. After all, Miss Universe is not a public speaking contest — it’s a beauty contest! Still, making it to Top 5 was no minor, minor feat, so here’s my sincere… “MAJOR, MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS, MISS RAJ!”
