Torrential Rains Trigger Flooding And Mudslides

At least eight people died and nine others remain missing after torrential rains triggered floods and mudslides in southwestern Japan, national broadcaster NHK Television said, citing local officials.

The victims were between 63 and 95 years old.

Houses and cars were damaged and hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes. Fresh water supplies have been cut off.

Television footage showed dozens of rescuers airlifting people by helicopter, and others were shown lying on blankets outside awaiting evacuation.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the peak of the rain has passed in southern Japan but it warned residents of a possibility of more landslides.
