NCAA Men’s Basketball: Morehead State Pulls Big Upset
March Madness has begun, and it could not have been any madder than this.
Demonte Harper hit a three-point shot with 4.2 seconds to spare then star center Kenneth Faried blocked the final shot of the game to give 13th-seed Morehead State a 62-61 victory over No. 4 Louisville in the first of several upsets on the first day of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament proper on Thursday. Harper, who struggled the whole game and had missed all of his five previous attempts from beyond the arc, received the inbound pass in the Eagles’ final play, then patiently ran the clock before stepping up behind the 3-point line for the winning shot.
Morehead State’s big win was followed later in the day by other upsets, including a 69-66 victory by 12th seed Richmond over fifth-ranked Vanderbilt. The Southeast Regional was also rocked by an upset after No.11 Gonzaga demolished No.6 St. John’s 86-71. All other higher seeds in the Southeast, led by No.1 Pittsburgh and No.2 Florida, advanced to the next round.
