Never the Strangers: the sound behind We Can Do Anything

Never The StrangersAs Sun Cellular’s ongoing BlackBerry video contest hits a high note, so does the career of the band Never the Strangers, the collective sound behind the official anthem “We Can Do Anything” which by the title alone brings inspiration and prompts non-musicians to create their own version of the music video.

“We’re pretty sure the youngsters will be able to connect (with the song) given the context of having fun and mobile connectivity,” says Ace Libre, lead vocalist and keyboardist of the band. While writing the official sound track for Sun’s BlackBerry video, Ace, who also pens the band’s songs, was reminded of his college days.

“I visualized a barkada with swag while writing the song. In the bridge, the line ‘The party never begins without us’ expresses the idea clearly. I’m not much of a partygoer nowadays but I had some moments in college. It’s really fun to have a group of buds to stick with, whether you’re early for a party or late,” reminisces Ace.

“We Can Do Anything” has recently been the subject of creative and fun collaborations between friends enticed by Sun Cellular and BlackBerry’s nationwide contest that will award all expense-paid international trips for 4 to the best three videos. For the band, however, this original composition is another standout in their ascent to musical success, following the release of their self-titled debut album containing 11 songs including one track that was made into a commercial jingle.

Discovered by multi-awarded musician Rico Blanco before the band finally settled with the name Never the Strangers, the group of Ace Libre, PJ Lavina, Francis Victa and JP del Mundo all attended the same university not too long ago. Back then, they were known as Leonecast, a bunch of college students still discovering their sound and trying to find their place in music landscape.

The name Never the Strangers was borne out of the members’ personal belief that music is an effective instrument that brings people closer together. “It sort of implies that music, which everyone is familiar with, is definitely a way to make people relate to each other; thus the vision of a world full of friends through music, a world without strangers, or as we put it, Never the Strangers.”

The band describes their sound as affective, catchy and inspiring, while their music is heavily influenced by new wave and post punk, alternative rock, piano rock and pop. In making the music video “We Can Do Anything,” the band says they had so much fun goofing around with Sun Cellular endorser Maja Salvador who is also seen in the video.

“It was really fun! For most of the shoot, we were instructed to simply have fun inside the car doing crazy things with the props (shades, hats, toy instruments, stuffed toys, etc.), headbang to the song and sing along. For a moment, we couldn’t believe it was Maja Salvador we were fooling around with. Hopefully we bump into her one of these days,” says Ace, still amused.
