New ‘obese chairs’ appear on Brazil’s subway

If you happen to pass through some of Sao Paulo’s Metro stations, you’ll definitely recognize several blue-colored seats which are almost twice as wide as the normal white ones. The special chairs for fat people have been installed on Brazil’s subway to deal with the country’s soaring obesity rate.

It’s such a great idea. We all know what it’s like to have a fat person squeezing themselves into a small seat next to us on public transport and I guess this would help.

Unfortunately, these chairs are being ignored by obese passengers who are apparently too embarrassed to use them. One Metro official said: “It may be that they don’t want to think of themselves as fat or they resent being put in with pensioners and the disabled.”
