Newark Airport Currently in Lockdown After a Probable Security Breach
A terminal in Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey was closed for a lockdown Sunday, January 3, after authorities found out that there was a possible security breach. A man was observed to have gone the wrong way though a checkpoint exit.
The incident happened at 5:20 PM local time at terminal C (picture features terminal C). A man walked from the public side to the sterile side (where passengers who were already screened go to). The airport handles 35 million travelers annually.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) initially stopped all screenings and then ordered all passengers in the sterile area to be re-screened two and a half hours later.
After that, all those who have already boarded planes for outgoing flights were also ordered to be screened again. No flights then were allowed to leave terminal C.
The airport is the second largest hub for Continental Airlines, thus many flights of the airlines were grounded as the airport went on lockdown.
TSA authorities are still searching for the man as of this time. They assured, however, that flights will resume once everybody goes through screening again and regardless of whether they found the man or not.
