North Korea confirms nuclear test

North Korea had successfully conducted its second nuclear weapons test on Monday, the communist state’s official media said.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, “the current nuclear test was safely conducted on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology.”

The United States Geological Survey, CNN and other news wires around the world reported a magnitude 4.7 earthquake 375 kilometers (230 miles) northeast of the capital Pyongyang at about 10:00 a.m. local time today.

South Korea’s president, Lee Myung-Bak, has called an emergency security meeting to discuss the North Korean nuclear test.

South Korea’s stock market fell 4% on the news, over fears that regional tensions would rise.
