Northwest Airlines Flight Incendiary Attempt Labeled as Act of Terrorism
Northwest Airlines flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit Friday, Christmas Day, was marred with an attempt for an incendiary attack by a Nigerian passenger as it lands in the runway. He was subdued but was injured in the process. The White House called the incident as an attempt of terrorism.
There were a total of 278 passengers in the flight, and two of them were injured from the incident. The Nigerian, 23-year-old Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to burn himself using the incendiary device. He has admitted that the had ties with al-Qaeda.
US President Barack Obama, who was having a Christmas holiday in his home state Hawaii is being kept informed about the incident. He has ordered that all measures be checked if they are in place to ensure air travel safety. Officials however, are not yet considering to raise terrorism alert level, which is currently at second to the highest of five levels (code: orange).
The plane despite being a Northwest flight has the marking of Delta Airlines as the two have merged in April 2008.
